Used Robot Myths - Robots Done Right
Used industrial robots are an excellent option for automating production processes. There are many high-quality articulated robots available through the second-hand market including the FANUC M-20ia and the Yaskawa MH50. Used robot manipulators provide the same automation benefits as new robots but at a fraction of the price. Despite the affordability of second-hand robots, many are still hesitant to automate with them. Below is a look at some of the common myths surrounding used robots.
- • Myth 1: Used robots have short lifespans - Industrial robot arms are some of the most durable and long-lasting machines. Six axis robots can operate for over 100,000 hours, remaining operational for several decades. A used robot that has been reconditioned will have atleast several more years of operation left. Used robot lifespans are similar to those of new robots. A used ABB IRB 2400 can last just as long as a new robot.
- • Myth 2: Used robots are unreliable - Another myth about used robotic manipulators is that they will be unreliable. Many falsely assume a used robot will be faulty and plagued with problems. The majority of used robots are in good condition either through proper maintenance or reconditioning. Sellers want to get as much value from their used robot so the best way to ensure this is to sell the robot in good condition. Reputable resellers will thoroughly test robots prior to selling to ensure they are fully operational. There are many used robots for sale in like-new condition. In addition, most used handling robots are ones from the top brands such as FANUC and Yaskawa Motoman.
- • Myth 3: Lack of availability of parts - Lack of spare parts is another common myth about used robots. Buyers may be concerned they will not be able to find parts when components need to be replaced. However, there is a large used part market for robots. Many used robot resellers also sell used parts. There is typically no shortage of used part resources.
- • Myth 4: Used robots will have high operation hours - This myth about used robots having higher operation hours may be partially true. While older manufacturing robot arms will likely have higher hours there are also used robots that are just a few years old with low operation hours. It is important to keep in mind high operation hours are not necessarily bad as they do not indicate the overall condition of the robot.
- • Myth 5: Used robots are outdated - It does not matter how old a robot may be, it will still provide mostly the same automation benefits. The speed and accuracy of older robots is still similar to a new robot as not much has changed in that regard. While newer robots may have more up to date features, alot of simple applications like robotic palletizing and automated press tending might not need those features anyways.
- • Myth 6: Used robots are not user-friendly - Many new robots are advertised as intuitive and user-friendly, giving the impression used robots are not. This is not the case as the technology for operating and programming robots as remained very similar. Robot technicians are likely to already be familiar with older robot models which cuts down on training. New robots might have a bigger learning curve and require more training.
- • Myth 7: Greater costs will be incurred in the long run - Many may think that used robots will cost more long term despite having a lower price tag. Buyers may think used robots will require more maintenance and repairs leading to higher costs. Used robots will not require more maintenance than new robots. Should a part need to be replaced, a used one can purchased at a much lower cost than a new part. In addition, a lower upfront cost will allow for a quicker ROI and faster savings.
